Sonny bill williamss boxing opponent in jail

"The family is shocked and is deeply saddened by this tragic news. We are confident they will receive the support they need for their painful recovery," a spokesperson for the family told USA TODAY Sports.

Williams, 29, was convicted of sexual battery as a 14-year-old boy in 2011, court documents say. His lawyer said it was no issue of race, but the outcome was based on the boy's own testimony that Williams was angry with him and had repeatedly punched him. A report on a police investigation of Williams' arrest by the Georgia State Patrol revealed "significant evidence" of assault.

The Atlanta attorney for Williams, John DeSantis, declined to comment in response to comments made by his client by attorney Mark Alston, who represented the boy's family in a case against Williams, at the time of Williams' guilty plea.

Williams, who has three siblings and a stepson, has since retired from boxing after his arrest. Alston had previously filed a grievance against Williams on behalf of the Alston family, according to ESPN.com's Dave McMenamin, who first reported about the case.

"I'm so proud to have represented this young man from across the country. Sonny Bill Williams has fought for so many years for this cause," Alston told ESPN.com last month. "I am humbled by the outpouring of support and prayer for this family in their time of need."

Cox's attorney said the boxer's arrest was not related to "any misconduct" or even racial bias against blacks in the boxing ring. However, Alston has said that the evidence is enough to be able to argue that Williams broke the law because he was younger and therefore more easily provoked. The case was settled, and the court released the victim's name.

The judge who handled the case denied bond for Williams. His family has asked his family to keep their eyes closed while he recuperates, DeSantis said.

"I think the next move would be for them to spend some time in jail.... He's a free man," DeSantis said.

In January, Alston, who was released in August, announced his intention to bring another civil suit against the state, which is expected to come down this week. Alston had fought successfully in Atlanta state court, winning an April trial to challenge a 2007 ruling by Atlanta judge John D. Wilson that suspended him after two years on probation. His previous legal victory, in 2015, was to have had no further action until 2017.

LIMA - A member of an international relief team has been deployed to provide humanitarian assistance to affected areas in Qld as flood warnings remain in place and water levels are low.

The humanitarian relief mission is being led by the Red Cross in Brisbane, who are based in the city.

The team will fly to Brisbane to help those who are unable to access immediate emergency assistance and are still waiting for help to arrive.

It is also being deployed to Victoria, which is expected to be hit by a major flood.
